Other Local Initiatives

Our active global initiatives implemented across the bank are not the only activities that we engage in with the communitites. We also organized and participated in many other local community programmes, including:

Ploenchit Fair

On 29th November, SCBT staff participated in one of the most exciting charity fairs in Thailand, called "Ploenchit Fair", at Shrewsbury International School.

Ploenchit Fair, celebrating its 51st Birthday this year, is a traditional fun day for all and has been one of the biggest events of the social calendar in Bangkok since it was first held in 1957. Proceeds from the Fair are administered by the BCTFN (British Community in Thailand Foundation for the Needy) and distributed to charitable organizations throughout the country.

Standard Chartered Bank (Thai) is proud to sponsor the Fair. Everyone enjoyed the fun at the Water Splash Game booth arranged by SCBT and not surprisingly, dunking a banker in water proved very popular this year with the general public!

Children Sponsorship & Scholarship Programme

Standard Chartered Bank (Thai) Wholesale Bank team has adopted 4 underprivileged children from Bann Nong Kratoom in Hua Hin. The programme has the aim to provide those children with opportunities to finish their minimum education requirements by laying out the foundations of self-sustained and self-maintained development with co-operation from their school. These improvements to the school for the children include:

Vegetable Plantation
Poultry Farm
Kitchen
Playground
Library
Infirmary
Computers and Internet Access

Furthermore the team has investigated into the family foundation and found that the children also face with hardship of broken families at home. Most have runaway parents and are living with relatives, who are often themselves struggle to make ends meet, or are living in an overcrowded orphanage. The bank aims to provide small amount of funds for each adopted children to ease the burden on their caretakers and make everyday struggle less difficult; these children have equal rights of opportunities to have the better things.

Mangrove Reforestation

In 2008, a team of 70 staffs from Standard Chartered Bank (Thai) paid a vitsit to the Royal Thai Army & Nature Education Center at Bangpu, Samut Prakarn, as a part of World Wildlife Fund for Nature(WWF) programme, to participate in a mangrove reforestation activity by planting more than 400 tree sapplings.

They were educated about the nature of mangrove forest and then explored the richness of Bangpu Mangrove Forest. Last but not least, they helped each other to plant mangrove trees along the Bangpu seashore.

Another team of 55 Standard Chartered Bank (Thai) staffs also participated in mangrove reforestation at Welu Wetland Nature Reserve, Chantaburi. They succeeded in planting 8-rai of mangroves in an effort to lessen the global warming.

A considerable of staff effort and participation was involved in creating this successful activity, and a total contribution of 33,600 baht was also raised.

In 2009 Standard Chartered Bank (Thai) intends to expand on its mangrove reforestation programme. The initiative is to plant at least 10,000 trees during the year in the devastated area of mangrove and mud plains.
