Living with HIV campaign is an innovative peer education programme aimed at informing employees on the facts of HIV/AIDS, how it spreads, how it can be prevented, and how to care for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
Local employee champions, who are open-minded but culturally sensitive, to implement the programme.
HIV Champion Education Programme
In 2003 Living with HIV was launched because of a substantial number of the employees were living with HIV, so we needed to focus not only on prevention but on the issue of stigma and how those affected could continue to live healthily and positively. Hence the use of peer of education – volunteer HIV Champions.
The champions go through education and workshops that will cover the theme of:
What are HIV and AIDS?
Prevention
Getting tested
How HIV is spread
Positive living and treatment
Locally we have worked with other companies such as BMW, Boots the Chemist, Siam City Cement PLC, Unilever, Thai Oil, Asian Seafood, and many others, to train their people so that they can also implement a peer education programme in their companies. We are also a major partner with Clinton Global Initiative, Thailand Business Coalition on Aids, and AIESEC.
Since 2003 in Thailand we have educated 25,000 throughout the country. Last year alone the record was exceptionally high at 17,000 people. In 2009 we aim to at least double the amount.
World Aids Day
Marking Worlds Aids Days in conjunction with The Thai Red Cross, the heart of Aids Research Centre, committed NGOs, and other respective companies were gathered to parade down town Silom in making a point that the number of HIV infected in Thailand is the highest amongst South and South-East Asia region, with more than one-in-one-hundred adults in this country of 65 million people is infected with HIV, and AIDS is one of a leading cause of death.
All parties join hands in raising awareness for the use of protection and how to work or live with HIV infected. The parade ends at The Thai Red Cross which was fruitful with information about aids.
The event achieve such level of high-spirited with the strong involvement of Standard Chartered Bank’s own staff that turned up not only as volunteers but have been serving the community throughout the year.
